1st Sutra: Recognize that the Other Person is You
Our theme for 2013 is the first sutra of Yogi Bhajan's Five Sutras of the Aquarian Age: Recognize that the other person is you.
“In me, I have found only one reality—that I breathe in and I breathe out. And so anything that breathes in or out is reality. When I found this as a reality in everybody, I found myself in everybody and everybody in myself.” Yogi Bhajan from The Teachings of Yogi Bhajan, p. 156 #617.
“There is no difference between you and me. He is speaking and He is listening, and that is maya. If you understand this maya, you will understand this whole truth. He is speaking to me. He is listening to you, because He is the giver of the breath. He gives me breath to speak and He gives you breath to listen. If you understand this secret, you understand everything.” Yogi Bhajan from The Teachings of Yogi Bhajan, p. 156, #616
Kindness is the natural expression of the first Sutra of the Aquarian Age: Recognize that the other person is you is the act of recognizing that another person IS your own kind. Kindness is an aspect of Sat Nam, as we cultivate identification with our own Self and the Self in others—love and a lack of separation and a feeling of being in-kind with others. This virtue is a feeling of universal kindness, recognizing that everyone is part of you.
"We can only truly see ourselves reflected in another person. If we admire qualities in another, we are only seeing those same qualities in ourselves. These qualities may not yet be developed or expressed. On the flip side, if we see qualities that we dislike in another—again, we are only seeing ourselves—perhaps a disowned part called the shadow. The more we identify with our ego, the more judgmental we will be toward others and the more we will project our own personality traits onto others.
In the Age of Aquarius, the age of enlightenment, we are being called to take full responsibility for our experiences and to live the Truth—we are ALL ONE.
REFLECTION: Just for one day, own everything (good and bad) that you see in another person." Haribhajan Singh, also known as the Catalyst Yogi.
“The first sutra of the Aquarian Age is, ‘Recognize that the other person is you.’ Okay, so I’m God and the other person is me. Hmmm… we’re both God. Ah! There lies the most essential truth: There is only One, and tag! We’re all It. So what now? As everything else falls away and we become grounded in our soul, we begin to live in our own essence; our words and actions become singularly marked by kindness and compassion, and that compassion has no limit. That is Saibhang, living in the light that is love itself and being spontaneously present in the experience of each moment—on the edge of the infinite moment of creation where love is constantly unfolding. Living in that space, every action becomes seva, selfless service, and in fact, there’s nothing else to do but serve the One God.” – Guruka Singh Khalsa
